Glossary

ACE Inhibitor Angiotensin-Converting-Enzyme Inhibitor
Angiotensin Is a hormone that causes the narrowing of the blood vessels.
Assent Assent means agreement, approval or permission.  It can refer to any verbal or non-verbal conduct which can be reasonably interpreted as willingness.  Assent can be express, implied, constructive or apparent.
Bioavailability The extent and rate at which a drug becomes available to the body meaning entering the systemic circulation.
Confidentiality Is the responsibility to not share any personal information with unauthorized persons.
Consent Is the voluntary agreement of an adult, or competent child, based on adequate knowledge and understanding  of relevant information, to participate in Research.
Data A series of measurements or observations
Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is an illness of your heart muscle where it becomes stretched and thin. This means that it’s unable to pump blood around your body efficiently. 
DSMB Data and Safety Monitoring Board
ECG This is the short name for the test called an Electrocardiogram  (ECG) which records the heart’s rhythm and electrical activity.
Echo This is the short name for the test called an echocardiogram.  Echocardiograms use sound waves to produce a detailed picture of your heart.

Enalapril Is a drug that helps to reduce blood pressure.

Ethics Committee Describes a group of people appointed to consider ethical issues.
Formulation Is the process in which different chemical substances, including the active drug, are combined to produce a final medicinal product.
Hormone Regulatory substance produced in an organism and transported in tissue fluids such as blood or sap to stimulate specific cells or tissues into action.
Hypertension Is high blood pressure.
Left Ventricular Dysfunction (LVD) Participants in the LENA Study are able to receive an ACE inhibitor in addition to their standard medicine.

Mini-tablet A new formulation of tablets that is smaller than 3mm
ODMT Oraldispersible Mini-tablet. Such tablets are smaller than 3mm and disintegrate in the mouth, as soon as they become in contact with water.
PD Pharmacodynamics. This is the study of the biochemical and physiological effects of drugs on the body within or on the body and the mechanisms of drug action and the relationship between drug concentration and effect.
PK Pharmacokinetics. This describes the branch of pharmacology concerned with the movement of drugs within the body.
Off-Label “Off-label” drug means that the drug’s effects have not been studied in a certain group of people.
Screening The beginning of a study is called a screening.
Venipuncture To take blood from a vein, or obtaining blood intravenously.
